“If parents understood the huge educational benefits and intense happiness brought about by reading aloud to their children, and if every parent – and every adult caring for a child – read aloud a minimum of three stories a day to the children in their lives, we could probably wipe out illiteracy within one generation.” – from Reading Magic, by Mem Fox The Junior League of Portland is proud to partner with the Bring Me a Book organization and be the first to bring this fantastic reading program to Portland, Oregon. We will partner with local community organizations that serve underprivileged families and bring our program to them. The Bring Me a Book committee has been trained to run the First Teachers Workshop, which educates parents on the importance of reading aloud to their children from birth to help foster a loving bond with their parents and to prepare them for their early school years. The workshop also focuses on how to make reading aloud a part of their everyday routine, how to make it fun for both the parent and child and also explores common challenges families may face when reading aloud. At the conclusion of each workshop participating families receive a new hardcover book to take home and practice what they have learned and to help bring books to children in need. Our committee also is able to provide childcare while parents are taking part in the workshop. We are thrilled to bring our First Teachers Workshop to local community partners in the Portland area that serve underprivileged families and their children. In addition to the First Teachers Workshop, we donate a bookcase full of hardcover, quality children’s books that the participating families can access, to the organization we are working with to help inspire reading. bringmeabook.org
